Chapter 19: Rest
By the second week of June I could not see my own feet.
We had been on the farm for twelve weeks, and the wheat behind the barn had gone from green to gold.
No car had come up the lane.
Cosima rang the cousin's landline every Sunday from a different pay phone, said one sentence, and hung up.
I was well into my seventh month, and the doctor in Gardner had put me on my side in bed for three days.
He was a gray tired man with a bad knee.
My blood pressure had jumped, he said, and the baby was fine, and he wanted me flat.
I had argued for ten minutes and lost.
So I lay on my left side on the farmhouse quilt at ten in the morning, big as a house, in one of Aurelio's undershirts and nothing else.
The window was open, and the smell of cut hay came in.
My mother was at the church in Gardner.
She had gone every morning since March and come back with the priest's recipes.
Aurelio sat on the edge of the bed with a bowl of peaches.
He fed me slices from his fingers.
He had grown a beard in the spring, close and salted with gray.
It made him look like a man I might have met in a different life, on a different dock.
"You don't have to do that," I said.
"I know."
"I can feed myself."
"I know you can." He put another slice in my mouth. "I'm not allowed to do anything else."
I laughed, and the bed shook.
He took the bowl away and set it on the dresser.
He lay down behind me on his side, with his chest against my back and his knees tucked behind mine.
He put one arm over me, under my breasts.
His hand found my belly, big and hard and warm under the cotton.
