Chapter 16: The Vote

The boardroom of Wainwright Freight had a table long enough for twenty and a view of every ship in the harbor.

Seven board members sat along one side of it in dark suits.

At the head, in his wheelchair, with his cane across his knees, sat the grandfather.

He saw me come in on Bram's arm, and he did not change expression.

"Sit anywhere, Miss Salisbury," he said. "You'll want the chair nearest the door."

I sat across from him.

Bram stayed on his feet beside me.

I had told Bram in the elevator that I wanted no hand on my back, and he had kept both of his in his pockets since.

"We're here on a motion to remove me as chair of the family trust," the grandfather said, "brought by my grandson, who has lost his head over a waitress."

A few of the board looked down at the table.

"Before we vote," he went on, "I have one item."

He slid a folded paper down the polished wood.

It was the grainy still from the Hartwell.

A small left hand on a rifle rail, and a thumb pressed against the wrist.

"This is the hand that killed my grandson Dermot," said the old man. "I have had it studied for three weeks."

He turned his slate eyes on me.

"The woman who wears it is sitting at this table, on my other grandson's arm."

Every head in the room turned.

I did not look at Bram. I looked at the old man and I felt the whole weight of the harbor behind me.

I had decided in the car.

I stood up.

"Yes," I said. "That's my hand."

Someone gasped. A pen rolled off the table.
