Chapter 15: Sunday Lunch
Albert Blair arrived at one, in a navy suit, with a bottle of wine and a face that gave nothing away.
Roland shook his hand with both of his.
"Albert. I can't tell you how glad we are."
"Mrs. Thackeray," Blair said to me. "You look better than you did at Stonegate."
"I'm eating, Mr. Blair."
"I'm glad to hear it."
Roland's neurologist friend came ten minutes later.
He was a soft, pink man with a leather bag, and he held my hand a second too long.
"Leah," he said. "Roland has told me so much."
"He hasn't told me anything about you."
He laughed, and nobody laughed with him.
We sat at the dining table, which Roland had set with the wedding china.
Imogen was not there.
Roland had told Blair she was at the office, and he had told me nothing.
Roland carved the roast and talked about freight.
Blair listened and ate and watched me.
When the plates were cleared, the doctor leaned back and folded his hands.
"Leah, would you mind if I asked you a few questions? Just to see how you're doing."
"Not at all."
"Do you know what day it is?"
"Sunday. The twenty-ninth."
"And the president?"
I said the name.
"Do you know where you are?"
"In my husband's dining room, with my husband's investor, being quizzed by a man I've never met."
Blair made a sound into his napkin.
The doctor smiled thinly.
"Any hallucinations? Voices?"
"No."
"Roland tells me you've been hearing a car in the night. And that you walked out of the house a month ago and spent a week with a man you'd just met."
I looked at Roland.
He looked at the roast.
"I walked out of the house," I said, "after he told me my brain injury was a hunger strike."
