Chapter 19: A House With a Chair

Sullivan's POV

The terrace outside the ballroom was empty and freezing, and I stood at the rail without my jacket.

Behind me the glass doors opened and shut.

"Sir," a voice said.

It was the big bald man from the table, my old team lead, with a ribbon over his heart.

He had not said my name in seven years.

"You're not a sir," I said. "You never were."

"I wanted you to hear it from me." He put his hands on the rail beside mine. "That morning on the porch, I thought you were a coward. I thought you'd had her and thrown her out."

"I did throw her out."

"I saw your face afterward. I should have known." He looked at the water. "The medic's inside. He wants to shake your hand. So do four others."

"I'm not ready."

"Nobody's asking you to be."

We stood in the cold.

"You're moving," he said.

I turned.

"How did you know that?"

"You haven't looked at the door once tonight. You kept looking at her."

I laughed, and it hurt.

"There's a house on Haywood Road," I said. "It's got a mattress and a folding table. Our daughter's map of the yard is on my refrigerator."

"So stay."

"The company's in Virginia Beach. A dozen men depend on it."
