Chapter 20: On His Knees

I took my sleeve out of his hand, and I pressed the elevator button.

He rode down with me.

Neither of us spoke for thirty-one floors.

He stood against the mirrored wall, and I looked at the numbers.

At the ground floor the doors opened on the lobby, and the lobby was full.

Word travels fast in a tower.

There were a hundred people on the marble, in lanyards and suits and mailroom jackets.

They stood in a loose half circle around the elevators, and nobody pretended to be passing through.

Behind them, through the glass, I could see the plaza, and a long black car with its door open.

Landon came out of the elevator behind me.

He saw the crowd.

He stopped, and I saw him look for the face that would help him, and find none.

"Jo," he said.

"Not here."

"Please. Just give me five minutes. Not up there. Here, where I can say it."

"Say what?"

He took a breath that shook.

Then Landon Reed went down on both knees on the lobby floor.

He was thirty-seven years old, in a charcoal suit that cost more than my first car.

A woman near the desk covered her mouth.

"I was wrong," he said, loudly, for the room. "I was wrong, and I'm sorry. I was scared. I said things I didn't mean, I let people tell me what to do. Please. Whatever you want. Give me the company back and I'll do anything you ask."

I looked down at him.

I had imagined this for three weeks, in the shower and the grocery store, with my forehead against the cool window of my son's room.
