Chapter 16: Locked Out
Avery's POV
At ten to six on Friday there was a chain across the boathouse door.
It was a good chain, new and black and thick as a wrist.
It was wrapped three times through a hasp and closed with a brass padlock the size of a dinner roll.
Behind it, inside, were six boats and every oar we owned.
My four rowers stood on the wet grass in a half circle.
They looked at the lock the way people look at a dog that has bitten them.
"A tent's going up," said the rower with the braid. "They've staked half the lawn."
She was right.
White poles lay on the grass in rows, and a sign on a stand said HOLTWORTH HARVEST GALA, PRIVATE UNTIL THE 14TH.
"They can't lock our boathouse," I said.
"They have," said the rower with the gray bangs. "It's very thorough."
I took the chain in both hands and pulled, and it clinked, to say it had been pulled.
I put my shoulder to the door next, and the door stayed where it was and my shoulder reported back.
A man in a yellow vest came across the lawn with a clipboard and a second coffee.
