Chapter 5: The Lombardi Car
The taller guard stepped closer to me.
"Don Ruggieri was very clear, Miss Sartori. You come back with us."
"I don't work for Don Ruggieri anymore."
"The boss doesn't see it that way."
His hand closed on my suitcase.
I looked at the people drifting through the terminal and at the gate agent pretending to read her screen, and I knew I could not outrun two men with a back that wouldn't bend.
"Let go of the lady's bag."
The voice came from behind me.
It was dry and unhurried, and I had never heard it in my life.
The guards both turned.
A man stood three steps away with his hands in the pockets of a charcoal coat.
He was tall, with dark hair going silver at one temple and a face that gave nothing away.
Two men stood behind him, and neither one looked bored.
"Don Lombardi," the shorter guard said, and his hand dropped from the suitcase.
Gabriele Lombardi did not look at him.
He looked at me.
"Miss Sartori. You're bleeding through your coat."
"It's fine."
"It isn't."
He turned to the guards, and the dryness left his voice.
"Tell your boss that the Sartori seat at my table is filled. Tell him the Lombardi family does not hand back what it is given. If he has a quarrel, he knows my address."
"Don, we have orders."
"You have a choice," Gabriele said. "You can walk to your car, or you can explain to the airport police why you laid a hand on a woman with a boarding pass."
The tall one looked at his partner.
They both looked at the two men behind Gabriele.
They left.
Gabriele took my suitcase himself.
"Your flight was never going to take off with you on it," he said. "I thought they might come. I flew in this afternoon."
