Chapter 6: The Underboss Seat

Gabriele put his phone in his pocket and did not hurry.

"They'll stop at the gate," he said. "They won't come in."

"You can't know that."

"I put twelve men on that road when I saw your flight booked."

He said it as a plain fact.

I stood, and the kitchen tilted.

He caught my elbow, and then let go as soon as I had my balance.

"Ines has made up a room. Sleep. In the morning you meet the table."

I slept in a bed with clean sheets and no one's cologne on the pillow.

I woke with my back stiff and the sun already high.

Downstairs the Lombardi men were waiting around a long table in a dim room.

There were eleven of them.

None looked pleased.

Gabriele sat at the head, and the chair at his right hand was empty.

"Gentlemen," he said. "Renata Sartori. As of today she is my underboss."

Nobody spoke.

Then a man with a heavy gray mustache and a gold tooth leaned back until his chair creaked.

"Don Gabriele," he said slowly. "With respect. This is the woman who ran Ruggieri's desk. We're supposed to take orders from a girl who comes to us with a whipped back and a suitcase?"

A few men laughed.

I took the empty chair at Gabriele's right.

He did not look at me, and he did not say anything.

He was waiting to see what I would do.

I did not mind.

I had spent five years in a room like this, watching men guess what I was worth.
