Chapter 15: What Rae Brought

I didn't trust her for one second.

So I set the kitchen up before she came.

Dot sat at the head of the table with her glasses on their cord.

Three club women sat along the wall, each with her arms folded, each one a woman I had cooked for and cleaned up after for three years.

Gage waited in the truck outside, because I asked him to.

My phone lay face up on the table with the recorder running.

Rae came through the back door at nine on Thursday night.

She had on the church dress, and no lipstick.

She stopped in the doorway and counted the women.

"You said alone," she said.

"I said you could come."

Her mouth twisted.

She sat down in the one empty chair, across from me, and put a phone on the table.

It wasn't hers.

It was a cheap gray burner with a cracked corner.

"Brock bought two," she said. "He gave me this one to call him. He didn't know I'd record every call."

"Why?"

"Because he told me what he was doing, and I didn't think he'd do it to me later."

"Play it," Dot said.

Rae pressed a key.

Brock's voice came out of the cheap speaker, low and pleased.

"The girl was easy. She was scared and twenty-one. Gage had her once and went off to prison, and she thought it was mine."

Nobody in the kitchen moved.

"You knew it wasn't," Rae's voice said on the recording.

"I knew in a week. He told me himself, drunk. Whoever holds the boy holds the seat. Gage can't have the club without his blood. I keep the blood, I keep the club."

Rae stopped it.

One of the women said something under her breath that I won't repeat.

I looked at Rae.

"That's why you said ask him why he kept me."

"I figured you'd hear it from me before he used it on you."

"You didn't tell me in my own house. You called child services on me."
