He Cheated With His Ex, So the Club President Claimed Me novel · Chapter 24 of 24
Chapter 24: Claimed
I walked out of the clubhouse by the back door at noon.
It was the same door, and the same step, and the same gravel yard.
Three weeks ago I had stood here with a lunch bag in my fist and taken off my cut in front of every man in the club.
Now the yard was full again.
Two hundred people, the whole of Iron Pines and half the town, stood on the stones in the sun.
The brothers wore their cuts and had polished their boots.
The old ladies stood along the left side in good dresses, and Dot sat in the front in a folding chair, already crying.
The bikes lined the fence on both sides, chrome and black, a hundred of them.
I wore the blue dress.
There was a cracker stain on the hem that nobody had managed to get out, and I had decided to keep it.
Eli sat on the old brother's shoulders with his bear, wearing a tiny black cut that Dot had stitched from a brother's old vest.
On the back it said, in white thread, SMALL BUT MIGHTY.
He saw me and shrieked and pointed.
"Ma!"
I laughed, and my eyes stung.
Gage stood at the end of the aisle between the folding chairs, with his back straight and his hands loose.
He wore a black jacket over a white shirt.
On his left breast, sewn back on with fresh thread, was the president's patch.
He watched me walk to him, and his face did something I'd only seen it do once, on a stump in the ash.
I stopped in front of him.
"Hi," I said.
"Hi."
The old brother cleared his throat from behind us, and the crowd laughed.
"We're not doing the church part," he said. "The preacher's got a bad knee, and the club doesn't hold with it anyway. Gage has something to say. Then Hallie has something to say. Then there's beer."
