He Cheated With His Ex, So the Club President Claimed Me novel · Chapter 8 of 24

Chapter 8: Church

Church was held at eight that night in the long room at the back of the clubhouse.

Women were never allowed in.

Gage let me in.

I stood against the wall by the door with my bandaged hand in my pocket, and twenty-two men in leather turned their heads to look at me.

Brock sat at the far end of the table.

He had on a clean shirt, and he had put on a patch that said PROSPECT, to show he was following the rules.

Four men sat beside him.

The old brother with the ponytail sat near Gage, with his arms folded.

A man in a gray suit sat between them with a folder, and nobody had introduced him.

"We'll start with the motion," Gage said.

Brock stood up.

"Brothers. I'll say it plain." He spoke slowly, like a man who had practiced. "Three years ago this club lost its president to a federal weapons charge. Today he walks out three months early. Nobody walks out early without giving something."

Murmurs went around the table.

"You're saying I talked," Gage said.

"I'm saying the law gave you something. And you've never said what you paid for it."

That was the worst thing a man in that room could be called, and every man knew it.

The man in the suit opened his folder.

"This is a letter from the district attorney's office," he said. "It confirms an early release agreement on the basis of cooperation."

Gage's face did not change.

"Read me the sentence that says cooperation," he said.

The lawyer looked down.

He took a long time.

"It says 'compliance with the terms of the program,'" he said.

"That's a drug program," Gage said. "I took it in the second year. I got out three months early for taking it and for good behavior, and I took the full count on the weapons charge so nobody else at this table would have to take a share of it."

He looked around the room.

"The old man's brother was the lawyer. Ask him."

"He's right," the old brother said. "I saw the plea myself. No names. Not one."
