Chapter 12: The Table

I did not step aside.

Dread looked down at me, and I looked up, and neither of us moved.

Twelve men watched, and not one of them spoke.

"You have a right to vote on what he did," I said. "Fine. He lied to me for three years, and I might never forgive that. But he did it because Clint was holding me over his head."

"It doesn't change what he is."

"It changes what he's worth to you."

Dread's eyes narrowed.

"You've wanted Clint for three years," I said. "You've wanted him on his knees in front of everyone he's ever lied to. You have never once gotten close, because he's a deputy and you're a biker, and every door you try is shut."

"Careful."

"But Alec's been in his pocket for two years. He has Clint's phone number, his habits, the days he checks in and the questions he asks." I took a breath. "Clint doesn't know the table has found out. Alec is the only man in this county who can walk up to him and make him believe anything."

Nobody said anything.

"Don't burn him," I said. "Use him."

The heavy man at the long table frowned.

"You're asking us to trust a rat."

"I'm asking you to trust me."

"We've known you for four days."

"You've known Clint for years," I said. "Which of us do you trust?"

A low laugh came from somewhere near the end of the table, and nobody claimed it.

"What do you want?" Dread asked.

"A trade. Alec's life, and his place here, for Clint. Not a bullet and not a fire. I want him in front of everyone who ever believed him. I want his badge on a table and his name on the evening news."
