Chapter 20: Count Them
The church room was dark when I got there at midnight.
One bulb burned over the head of the long table made of barn doors.
Dread stood beside it with his sleeves rolled to the elbow.
His vest hung on the chair behind him.
He locked the door when I came in.
The sound was loud in the empty mill.
"Sit," he said.
I walked to the table and stayed standing.
"You said you get to say what I owe."
"I did."
"So say it."
He came around the table slowly.
"Three things," he said. "One. You don't walk out of a bed I'm in without waking me."
"Fine."
"Two. You don't walk into that building without me at your back."
"Fine."
"Three."
He stopped in front of me and took my chin in his hand.
"Three, you count them out loud. Every one I make. Until I tell you to stop."
My mouth went dry.
"That's not a debt," I said. "That's a game."
"Then it's a game."
I had lost my job that morning.
I had walked out of a sheriff's office with my hands shaking, and I had been cold all day.
He had been looking at my mouth for ten minutes, and I was not cold anymore.
"Turn around," he said.
I turned.
He stood behind me, close enough that I felt the heat of him down my back.
"Hands on the table. Flat."
I laid my palms on the old wood.
It was rough and cool, and it still smelled of the smoke from the party.
His hands came to my hips and rested there.
"One," I said, and my voice shook.
"Good."
He drew my shirt up over my head. He undid my bra. He let them both drop.
His hands slid around, slowly, and took my breasts, and his thumbs found the nipples and circled.
"Two."
"Louder."
"Two!"
"That's it."
His mouth came down on the side of my neck, warm and open.
"Three," I whispered.
He bit me gently, and I jerked.
"Four. Oh God."
"Keep going."
