Chapter 28: Ten After Two

Brogan's POV

My mother was wiping down the counter of the empty diner at eleven at night.

She had been wiping the same square of Formica for a while.

I sat down on the stool at the end, where Wade used to sit with his boots on the rail.

"Ma."

"Don't Ma me. You're about to tell me something."

"Yes."

"Then get it over with."

I looked at the photo on the wall instead of at her.

"The night Wade was in the cell, he called me. Ten after two in the morning, from the county phone."

Her rag stopped.

"I was at the garage. I saw his name on the screen."

"And?"

"I let it ring."

I made myself say the rest.

"I'd sent him out on a club run that afternoon, and I was angry at how he handled it. I thought he was calling to whine. I thought, let him sit in there till morning and think about it."

"He called twice, Ma. I let it ring twice."

The diner was very quiet. The ice machine dropped a load.

"Three years," I said. "I've known he called. I didn't know what he wanted till Holzer's voice came out of a phone, and I still don't know what he'd have said."

I waited for her to hit me.

She put the rag down, folded, and came around the end of the counter.

She put both hands on my face and held it hard.

"Brogan McFadden. Look at me."

I looked.

"You think I didn't see that call on his bill? I paid the last bill for that phone. I read it at this counter."
