Chapter 22: Last Try
I went out to the gate alone.
Thane stood on the porch with his arms folded and let me.
Tarran was on the other side of the iron bars in a borrowed coat two sizes too big, with snow on his shoulders and his boots soaked black.
Two of Thane's wolves stood a few feet behind him, watching him.
He looked older.
Two months ago he'd stood on a porch with a glass of wine.
"Ilsa," he said.
His voice was hoarse.
"You walked all night."
"They took the trucks. The pack's trucks." He almost smiled. "I'm the bottom now. I do the laundry Tuesdays."
I didn't say anything.
"I'm not here to fight," he said. "I'm not here for anything. I just want to see him."
"No."
"Once. I just want to hold him once."
"No."
His hands came up and wrapped around the bars.
"Then present him," he said. "In the Moon Hall, in the light. Let them see he's mine. That's all. I'll never ask you for another thing. I just want the North to know I had a son."
I looked at him through the bars for a long time.
"You want the North to know you had a son," I said.
