Chapter 13: The Quiet Billionaire

Joanne's text came in somewhere north of Green Bay.

It was a link, and under it she had written: Barbara's board packet calls this "the founder's own account." Read it.

I opened it in the passenger seat of Ben's truck, with the cold lake out of sight behind the trees.

It was a magazine profile, a year old.

The headline said The Quiet Billionaire.

Russell stood on the first page in a gray suit, and beside him in a green dress stood a woman with her hand on his sleeve.

The caption said: Russell Tamblyn with his wife, Margaret, who left architecture to run their home.

Run their home.

I read the paragraph under it twice.

"I built this at a kitchen table with a laptop and a bad lamp," Russell was quoted as saying. "Nobody handed me anything."

"It was my lamp," I said.

Ben didn't answer.

I looked at the photograph again.

It was me at a charity dinner, three years ago, smiling because someone had told me to.

My hair was pinned up, and my name was in the caption.

Ben's hands had gone tight on the wheel.

He was looking straight ahead at the road, and he had not looked at me since I started reading.

"You've seen this," I said.

"Maggie."

"You've seen this page."

"The week you came," he said. "It was on the counter at the barber's. I was waiting for a haircut."

The truck went on down the highway, steady and quiet.

"Your first week," I said.

"Yes."

"The week I told you my name was Maggie Rooney and I was nobody from nowhere."
