Chapter 4: Queen of the Kings

I did not stay upstairs.

I came down the steel stairs and found him under the hood of my truck, and I said it to his back.

"You knew his name."

Dutch kept his wrench on the bolt he was turning.

"Everybody knows his name, Ruby."

"I never said it."

"You didn't have to." He straightened up and wiped his hands on a rag. "Somebody filmed it. Your husband, the girl on the bike, you handing him your ring. It's been on every phone in the county since yesterday afternoon."

My stomach turned over.

"Show me."

He took a phone from his shirt pocket, and the screen was already open to it.

I watched myself walk across the gravel in my good black dress.

I watched myself set a coffee cup on his gas tank.

The comments underneath said things like poor thing, and get her, and who's the blonde.

"That's fifty people who saw it," I said. "Not half the county."

"It's got more views than that. Half the county's watched it twice." He took the phone back. "A man like Chitwood can't go anywhere this week without somebody asking him about it. He won't like that."

"Good."

"No," Dutch said. "Not good. Sit down."

"I don't need to sit."

"Then listen. If those men come in here and ask for you, you're the new girl who helps with the feed. You've been here two days."

"I've been here since two a.m."

"Then you're good at your job."

I almost laughed.

I got a shop apron from the hook, and I had barely tied it when I heard the engines turn off the road and into the gravel lot.
