Chapter 7: Wherever You Go

Cade walked me back into the main room with his hand around my wrist.

He had taught himself to hold people that way, tight enough to steer and loose enough to deny.

"Everybody," he said. "Everybody, listen up."

Fifty faces turned toward us.

He lifted our joined hands over his head.

"My wife and I have some news. Ruby's pregnant. We're having a baby."

The room broke into noise.

Men shouted, glasses banged on tables, and someone started a slow stomping on the floor.

Tawny was standing by the kitchen door with her hand over her mouth.

She was no longer crying, and she was staring at Cade with her eyes wide.

"Let go of me," I said, under the noise.

"Smile," he said, in my ear. "Smile, and I'll let you walk out of here in one piece."

"You said the club would hear it from you."

"They will. All of it." He turned back to the crowd, beaming. "And I owe this woman an apology. In front of all of you."

The cheering died.

I felt him straighten beside me.

"I've been a bad husband," Cade said. "I'm not going to stand up here and lie about it. There was a mistake, and the mistake is over, and it's my fault. Ruby is my wife. She's the mother of my child. And she's coming home."

Applause rolled around the room again, and some of the men whistled.

The red-bearded prospect from the garage clapped hardest of anyone, and the younger one beside him wouldn't look up.
