Chapter 15: Too Late

I laughed.

I didn't mean to.

It came up out of me, standing barefoot in Lake Superior with my boots on the stones.

Rune's face tightened.

"I'm serious."

"I know. That's what's funny."

"Listen to me." He came down to the edge of the water. "I made a mistake."

"You made a speech. In front of sixty wolves. With a cake."

"I was out of my mind. The bond hit me at Midsummer like a truck, and I couldn't think. You know what a fated bond is like."

"I do now," I said.

He flinched.

I watched him decide not to hear it.

"She's a child, Kari," he said, low. "You've seen her. She cries if her coffee's cold. She throws things. She wants to be Alpha because nobody's ever told her no."

"You told the north she was your fated mate."

"She is. The Goddess has a sense of humor."

He took his hands out of his pockets.

"Greyfir's falling apart without you. Did you know that? The young ones won't train for my beta. The elders won't look at me. Half the pack goes quiet when I walk into the lodge."
