Chapter 8: Jasper's Rule

Jasper's POV

I had been alone with a client in a safehouse a hundred times, and I had never once lost count of my own rules.

Imogen sat at the kitchen table with the cufflinks in front of her and her hands pressed flat on the wood.

She had been looking at them for an hour.

"He found the safe," she said. "He found them behind the portrait. He knows I was in his study."

"He knows someone was," I said. "That's not the same."

"He wrote on the card that my face is familiar."

"He wrote a sentence. He can't prove anything."

My phone buzzed on the counter.

It was Nathan, three lines long.

I read it and put the phone face down.

"What?" she said.

"The judge signed the petition at four o'clock. As of this afternoon, Imogen Ames is legally dead."

She stared at me.

Then a small shaky laugh came out of her.

"I'm dead. Officially."

"Officially."

"So rule two," she said. "Nothing happens while I'm someone's wife."

I did not answer.

I could not.

She stood up and walked around the table, and I stayed where I was, leaning on the counter with my arms crossed, because it was the only way to keep my hands to myself.

"I'm not his wife anymore," she said. "The court says so."

"Imogen."

"You kissed me last night."

"That was cover."

"I know it was." She stopped an inch from me. "I want to know what you'd have done if there had been no ballroom."

I looked at her mouth.

"This," I said.

Her hands went into my hair.

I kissed her hard, with my whole mouth, and she opened to me at once and pulled me down by the collar.

I lifted her onto the counter.

Her legs came around my hips, and I felt every inch of her through my shirt.
