Chapter 10: Power Out
Cameron looked at the paper in his grandmother's hand.
He did not take it.
"What is it?" he said.
"An acknowledgment of paternity and a consent to custody," said the thin man in the gray suit. "Mr. Draycott, if you sign here, the process is greatly simplified."
"Simplified for whom?"
"For everyone."
Cameron turned to face the room.
There were twenty people in the bakery, and every one of them was watching.
"I'm the father," he said. "She's carrying my child. I will acknowledge that child in any court you like, with my name, today."
Odette's cane tapped once.
"Good."
"I will not give it to you."
"Cameron."
"I will not sign away custody to you or to Celia or to anyone. If you want it, you'll have to take me to court as well."
"You will have nothing to defend yourself with."
"Then I'll defend myself with nothing."
Nobody moved.
The baker had one hand on a tray of rolls and had forgotten to put it down.
Odette looked at her grandson for a long moment.
"You are making a very large mistake," she said.
"Probably."
She walked out, and the thin man shut his briefcase and followed.
The bell rang behind them.
The old man at the back said, "Well, that's the best thing I've seen since the lighthouse burned."
I laughed so hard I had to sit down on the stool.
When my shift ended at ten, I walked home along the lake road with my hands in my pockets.
Cameron walked beside me.
He didn't talk.
He kept to the outside, nearest the road, and he did not touch me once.
