Chapter 8: Free

I woke on the porch step with the quilt around my shoulders and the sun in my eyes.

I did not remember going back inside. I did not remember lying down.

The first thing I noticed was that I did not hurt.

I put two fingers on my collarbone, where the mark had burned for two years.

It was only a scar now, a pale raised line, and it was cool under my fingertips.

Dirk's presence was gone from the back of my head. I had not known how loud it had been until it stopped.

I sat up.

Tobias was at the bottom of the slope, where I had last seen him.

He sat in the wet grass with his elbows on his knees, and his shirt was still damp from the creek.

He had been there all night.

I walked down to him barefoot with the quilt trailing in the grass.

"You're awake," he said, and stood up too fast.

"You dropped to your knees last night."

"Yes."

"I felt something. When it snapped." I stopped a yard from him. "It wasn't coming from the ridge."

He did not look away. "No."

"Tobias."

"It's the second bond," he said. "It was there before. It's been under the first one for two years, and I couldn't feel you through it."

"Two years."

"Since the night he marked you."

I thought about that night, the Harvest Moon dance two years ago, and the cold circlet and Dirk's arm.

"You knew," I said.

"My wolf knew. The second he put his teeth in your shoulder, mine said your name." His voice stayed even. "I stood in the corner of the hall and watched you walk away with another man's mark on you."
