Chapter 14: A Father's Silence

I walked between the captain's pistol and my father's rifles.

A dozen Sorokin men had come up around the gate without a sound, and every barrel was on the Greco cars.

"Nika," my father said. "Move."

"No, Papa."

I stopped in front of the captain, close enough to see the sweat on his lip.

I had baked his daughter's christening cake, three layers, with sugar roses.

"Take that off Bruno's head," I said.

"He's a rat, madam."

"He's a guest at my father's gate, and you're standing in a Sorokin yard with a dozen rifles on you."

"The Don says..."

"The Don is sitting in his study with a hole where his plan used to be." I kept my voice level. "Did he tell you what was in his safe?"

The captain's eyes flickered.

"Ask him why he kept a file on his own wife for five years. Ask him why the yard is burning. Ask him who told the watchman to go home."

"He said the Bratva did it."

"He said it to you at five in the morning, with the fire already lit." I looked at the second captain. "Who told you I would be standing at this gate?"

Neither of them answered.

Behind me, I heard Lev settle his rifle against the car roof.

"Put it down," I said again, quietly. "Your wife sat beside me at the christening. I won't have her husband shot at my father's fence."

The captain looked at my father's men.

Then he lowered the pistol.

"This isn't finished," he said.

"No," I said. "Saturday is the blessing of the boy. Come to it, and bring your wife."
