Chapter 18: The Second Table
The Commission met at noon on Sunday, in the same back room on Taylor Street.
The same five chairs stood at the long table, under the same photographs of dead men.
Tomasso sat in his, with his right hand wrapped to the wrist in white gauze.
He had put on a perfect suit and his gold watch, and he had not looked at me once.
My father sat at his post, huge and still, with his hands flat on the wood.
I took the chair at his right hand.
The chairman rapped his cane on the floor.
"Two charges," he said. "Greco says the Bratva holds his wife. Sorokin says Greco drew a pistol on the church steps. Tomasso, you spoke first last time. Speak."
Tomasso stood.
He did it just as beautifully as he had before.
He said a family had been broken, and a woman had been poisoned against her husband.
He said his son had been taken from his own house in the night by the men who now sat at that table.
"I want my wife," he said. "I want my son. I want a Sorokin rifle explained."
"Sit," the chairman said, after a time. "Madam Sorokina."
I stood.
"My husband ran my life for five years on a plan," I said. "I'd like to bring a witness."
The door opened.
Alessia came in with her hair pinned up and her hands knotted in front of her.
Two of Tomasso's mother's friends walked with her, in their funeral black.
She looked at Tomasso once, and then at the chairman.
"My name is Alessia Costa," she said, in a thin voice. "I was Tomasso Greco's mistress for two years."
Not one man at the table made a sound.
"He told me his wife had agreed," Alessia said. "He told me she'd be gone by dinner on the day I came to the house. He said it three weeks before it happened."
