Chapter 20: Kneel
Nika's POV
"Here is what I want," I said to the kitchen.
My father put his hand on the steel counter.
Lev stood by the walk-in with his face carefully empty.
"I want Tomasso on his knees in front of the families," I said. "I want the words from his own mouth. I want half of what I built, and my name."
"And?" my father said.
"And I want Lev to stay. Not because you give him to me. Because he asks me, and I say yes."
Nobody moved.
"Is that clear?" I said.
"Yes, Nikushka," said my father, in a small voice.
"Good. Now somebody get me a chair."
At sundown the back room on Taylor Street was full.
Every captain who had stood in the church was along the wall, with his wife beside him.
Tomasso's mother sat at the end of the table on a folding chair, in black, with her cane across her knees.
Tomasso came in last, with his gauze greying at the edges.
He looked at the crowd, and at his mother, and the corner of his mouth moved.
"Tomasso Greco," said the chairman. "You have no seat. You have a choice."
"I've made it."
"You have not heard it." The old man laid both hands on the head of his cane. "The table strikes a man from its books when he refuses its law. Do you know what that is?"
Tomasso said nothing.
"No family will speak to you. No bank will clear a cheque. No man at this table, or in this room, will hold his hand if another family kills you in the street." The chairman's voice was dry. "A Don without a house is only a man. And it is a long walk home from Taylor Street."
