Chapter 7: Blood
The second shot took the passenger mirror off.
Lev stood on the brake, wrenched the wheel hard over, and put us sideways into a loading alley behind a closed laundry.
"Down," he said. "Get down on the floor."
I was already down, with glass in my hair and my hands over my head.
A third shot punched through the rear window.
Lev swore in Russian, something short and ugly, and threw the car into reverse.
The alley wall scraped the side of the car all the way back to the street.
A dark van sat across the road forty yards away with its headlights off and a man leaning out of the sliding door.
Lev floored it the other way.
We went down Archer at ninety with the snow coming straight at the glass, and I saw him change hands on the wheel.
His left arm had stopped working.
"Lev."
"I'm fine."
"You're not. Your sleeve's wet."
"Two minutes to the banya. Stay down."
"Stop the car."
"No."
"Stop the car now, or I climb over you and drive."
He looked at me for the first time.
His face was grey in the dashboard light, sweating, and entirely calm.
"You'd do it, too," he said.
"Try me."
He pulled in at the back gate of the banya, put the car in park, and went forward onto the wheel without a sound.
I got him out.
I do not know how.
He weighed twice what I did, and I dragged him across the courtyard with one arm around his chest while he told me to leave him and I told him to shut up.
My father's men came running.
