Chapter 8: The Door

In the morning I went down to my father's office and found nine of his men standing around his desk.

Lev's name was on a sheet of paper in front of him.

"Reassigned," my father said, without looking up. "To the yards."

"No."

The nine men looked at the wall.

"Nikushka, a man who gets his charge shot at does not keep the post."

"A man who takes a bullet for her does."

"He didn't take it for you. It hit him because he was stupid."

"It missed me by a hand," I said. "He turned the car so it would hit his side."

I put both hands on the desk.

"You told me for five years that you kept your word to me. You didn't step in. You didn't call me home. I'm grateful for that, and I'm asking for one more thing. Don't pick my guard for me."

"The Commission..."

"Is five days from now. Somebody wants me dead before then, or wants you to blame Greco and go to war first. I want the one man who has watched my street for five years. He stays."

My father looked at me for a long time.

"You sound like your mother," he said at last.

"Good."

He picked up the paper and tore it in half.

"He sleeps across the hall," he said. "And if I hear a noise I don't like, I come in with a shotgun."

The men relaxed, chuckling low.

Lev took the news from the chair in the corridor with his arm in a sling and his face carefully blank.

"Thank you," he said.

"Don't. You're stuck with me."

Alessia left that afternoon.

She stood in the banya's courtyard with her small plastic bag while Tomasso's mother held the car door for her.
