Chapter 10: Coffee on the Porch

I knocked on his door with one knuckle.

Hayes jerked awake so hard his cap fell off and the thermos rolled into the footwell.

He swung the flashlight at the window. It wasn't on.

"Easy," I said. "It's me."

He blinked at me. Then at my house. Then at the window dripping yolk and shaving cream.

"Oh, come on," he said.

"What are you doing here?"

"Watching your house."

"You were asleep."

"I was watching it with my eyes closed." He scrubbed a hand over his face. "Patty told me what happened at the marina. I figured somebody'd be stupid tonight."

"So you parked outside my house."

"Since eleven."

"And slept through it."

He looked at the window for a long, miserable second.

"I'm going to need you not to tell my guys about this."

I laughed.

It came out of nowhere, out loud on Birch Street at one thirty in the morning, and I couldn't stop.

He started laughing too, low and rough, with his forehead on the steering wheel.

"Get out of the truck," I said finally. "You can help me clean it."

We cleaned it together with a bucket of hot water and the dish soap from under my sink.

He held the flashlight. I scraped. Then we switched, and he scraped while I complained about his technique.

"You're smearing it."

"I'm spreading it out so it dries faster."

"That's not how anything works."

By three, the window was clean.

By four, we were sitting on my porch steps with coffee because neither of us was going to sleep.

The sky over the trees was starting to go gray. The lake was a long silver line at the end of the street.

He held his mug in both hands.

"They really said it," he said. "In front of the whole marina. 'We took you in.'"
