Chapter 22: The Planning Email
I read every word.
All sixty-three emails, in order, with the office lamp on and Hayes asleep ten feet away.
In February my mother wrote that Chelsea was "so scared, poor thing."
In March she wrote that a baby changes everything and Nadine would understand eventually, she always does.
In April my father wrote one line. "She'll land on her feet. She always does."
In May they talked about the screen.
Mom had found a rental company in town that did twenty-foot screens for graduations.
Dustin asked if the ultrasound would show up clearly "from the back row."
Mom said she'd make sure.
The last email was the long one. Mom had written it the Monday before the party, at eleven at night. I read it three times.
"Here's the plan, so we're all on the same page. Dad does the speech about everything we gave up for her."
"That way she remembers what she owes before anything happens. Then the slideshow, then the baby."
"Dustin, you get her phone before it starts. She never lets go of it and she'll try to call Patty."
