Mom didn't open it.
She folded the envelope once and slid it into the pocket of her apron, next to the card reader.
"You'll never see a dime," she said.
"Then you'll see a judge."
I walked back up the dock.
The man in the bass boat held the nozzle out of my way like a gentleman.
Hayes had the truck running. He didn't ask. He handed me a peppermint and pulled out of the lot.
August went by in shells.
The bride on the twelfth got married on a north shore lawn, and her mother cried harder than she did.
The resort show on the twenty-second went off clean with Hayes on the second tablet and Patty on the radio.
The young one learned to wire a finale rack without asking me anything.
I paid my two hands on time every Friday and checked the account twice a day.
Mom never answered the demand.
My lawyer said that was normal. She said people pay when the date gets close enough to smell.
On the last Saturday in August, I was at the shop at seven building the Cup racks.
