Chapter 24: Thanksgiving
I walked past my sister and out into the hallway.
She shut the door behind me before I reached the elevator.
Through it I heard her say, "Are you okay? Let me see," and Josh's low voice answer.
I pressed the button and watched the numbers come up.
I went to therapy every Tuesday and Thursday.
By the second week of November, I could make the croak whenever I wanted.
By the third week, it had edges.
The therapist had me say one syllable at a time into her little recorder.
Hi. No. Yes. My own name in two pieces, A and my, with a crack between them.
Every night I fed the recordings into my laptop.
On my free day at Carrick, I'd been building something since the surgery.
An app that listened to a voice like mine, a broken or rebuilt one, and learned it.
It didn't replace the voice with a nicer one.
It kept mine and made it clearer. It filled in the cracks a little, so a stranger could follow.
I showed it to Jude on the Monday before Thanksgiving.
I croaked the word "coffee" into my laptop's microphone.
