Josh looked up at the drawing.
Then he laughed, short, into the microphone still clipped to his blazer.
"Okay," he said. "Wow. Okay."
He rubbed the back of his neck.
"I'm going to be honest with all of you, because this is embarrassing for me."
He turned his body toward the front row, toward the investor, and away from me.
"I'm a business guy. I don't read code. I never pretended to."
"From day one, Jenna told me she designed Speakeasy. The ideas, the screens, all of it. She told me her sister just typed it in."
He spread his hands.
"She's my fiancee. I believed her."
A murmur went across the seats.
He turned toward the wings.
"Jen. Come on out here. Tell them."
Jenna came out.
She walked slowly in her long white dress, past him, to the center microphone.
I stepped back to give her room.
She didn't look at me.
She lifted the microphone off the stand and held it in both hands.
"I can't write code," she said.
Her voice was steady. No crack in it anywhere.
