Chapter 24: Nan Walks Out
The ball had gone clean through Langston's shoulder and out the back.
By the second day he was home, grey and sulking, in a bed with the curtains drawn.
The Haldane house had two footmen left in it.
The rest had given notice by Christmas night.
I went to see him on the twenty-sixth, with Tobias, because someone had to.
Nan was already there.
She sat in the chair by the window with her feet tucked under her.
A mug of tea was going cold in her hands.
She had not been arrested.
The inspector had written down what Langston told him and Langston had signed it with his left hand.
No one in Cleveland would say that a man who asked to be shot had been wronged.
"They've taken the bank," Langston said, from the pillows. "The directors met last night. Severance will be tried in the spring. Mother is at the county jail in the room with the good window, and she has asked me to send her dove-grey gloves."
"Will you?" I said.
"I sent the gloves." He looked at the ceiling. "I won't visit."
"And the yards?"
"Sold, to the men who work them, to pay what the family owes."
"All of it?"
"Mother's lawyer says I have signed away the family fortune."
"Have you?"
"Every cent," said Langston, and he smiled for the first time, a thin, tired smile. "It's rather a relief."
Tobias stood at the foot of the bed with his hat in his hand.
He had not said anything yet.
"Toby," said Langston.
"Yes."
"I was a bad brother."
"You were a boy who agreed with his mother."
