Chapter 26: The Bar Rag

Lena's POV

I had always thought a gun would be louder before it fired.

Amos held it level across the bar with his arm straight, and the muzzle looked very small and very black.

Behind me, a bolt scraped.

I did not turn.

I was watching his finger, and I was watching Boone's face over his shoulder, and I could see exactly what my husband was about to do.

"Boone, don't," I said.

"Stay where you are, son." Amos's voice was perfectly calm. "She's carrying the only thing that stands between me and what's mine. I'd rather you hear it from me.

"Nobody in this room is going to remember it any other way."

Forty men sat at the long table, and not one of them stood.

I looked at the road captain, and he was no longer in his chair.

I had not seen him leave it.

"You want the land, Amos?" I said. "It's yours. I told you. I'll sign it."

"You'll sign it after."

"After what?"

"After the baby," he said, and for the first time I heard him say the word. "I'm not a monster, girl. A woman can sign a paper from a hospital bed. But not with a husband watching."

He thumbed the hammer back.

Something hit me from behind.

It was a shoulder, and it was hard, and it drove me off my feet and down behind the bar.

The gun went off above my head.

The sound filled the whole room, and then there was glass raining down from the shelf and a smell of burned powder.

I landed on my hip with my arms around my stomach, and for a second I could not feel anything but my own heart.
