Chapter 28: Dawn Flatbed
Not one hand went up for Joelle.
Not one hand went up against her either.
Forty men sat with their arms on the table and waited, and I understood that they were waiting for me.
"She's the wronged party's to judge," the road captain said. "That's the old rule. Lena?"
"Not tonight."
I said it loud enough for the room.
"Tonight I'm going to the hospital to hear my baby's heartbeat, and you're going to bring Rafe's blood to the ER, and a deputy is going to take Joelle's statement. At dawn, in this lot, I'll give you my answer."
The captain nodded once.
They took her out to the deputy's cruiser.
