Chapter 19: Parking Services Gets A Guest

Griffin's POV

The Founders' Gala was held in the field house, under four hundred paper lanterns and a banner that said CARROWAY: STILL HERE.

I wore the suit Beau had picked out and a tie Rosetta had tied for me, on a chair, with a lot of swearing.

My place card said HEAD TABLE, SEAT 1.

I walked past the head table without stopping.

Camille was already in her chair at the center of it, in a green dress.

She had her clipboard on her lap and a glass of sparkling water in her hand.

She watched me go by and smiled with all her teeth.

"Griffin," she called. "Your seat is here, darling."

"I'll be right back," I said.

Table Nine was in the back corner, between the bar and a fake ficus.

There were two parking officers in their good uniforms, the man who ran the campus shuttle, a woman from Facilities, and Miranda.

Her hands were folded in her lap.

"You're lost," she said.

"I'm exactly where I want to be."

"You have a seat at the head table."

The woman from Facilities looked at my card, then at the empty head table, then back at me.

"You're the rowing kid," she said. "My son watches your boat." She pointed at Miranda. "Is this the raccoon girl?"

"Yes," I said.

"Hello," Miranda said, and held out her hand with great dignity.

The dean came across the room a minute later, a small woman in a purple suit with a plate of cheese in each hand.

"Table Nine," she said, to nobody in particular. "My favorite."
