Chapter 14: Thirty-One Percent
The boardroom on Friday had a long table and eight chairs.
I rode in the coat over Winslow's arm, and he laid it on the chair beside him.
Wesley sat across from us, easy and rested, with Sybil at his shoulder.
A man in a gray suit sat at the far end with a leather folder shut in front of him.
He did not speak to anyone.
The company's lawyer cleared his throat.
"The sale of the harbor terminal needs a majority of the shares. Mr. Wesley Holloway holds a proxy for Mrs. Rhona Holloway's thirty-one percent."
He slid a single page into the center of the table.
"Signed Tuesday at ten to four. Witnessed by Mr. Winslow Holloway."
Every head turned to my husband.
"That's my signature," Winslow said.
"Then there's no question," Wesley said, smiling.
"There's one," Winslow said. "I signed it Thursday night. I didn't read it."
The room went still.
"I didn't see her sign anything. I wrote my name on a date I knew nothing about, because my brother handed me the pen."
He said it flat, to the whole room, with his mother staring at him.
"That's a false witness signature," the lawyer said, very quietly.
"Yes. Put it in the minutes."
Wesley laughed, a little too high.
"He's lying to save himself. I stood in that kitchen. I watched her sign it with my own eyes."
"Tuesday?" Dorinda said.
She had come in behind us with a folder of her own.
Nobody had invited her, and nobody asked her to leave.
"At ten to four," Wesley said. "In the kitchen."
Dorinda put her phone on the table, screen up.
"Rhona was on the phone with me from three thirty-eight until four-oh-five. I'd called about her heart refills. She was in the kitchen making tea while she talked."
