Chapter 11: The Truce Visit

Verity Castelnaud came up the lodge road at noon on the third day, alone, with a white handkerchief tied to her cane.

She had come on foot from a car that was waiting at the bend.

Torben met her at the gate with his arms folded and the dog at his knee.

"Truce," Verity called, lifting the cane so the handkerchief fluttered. "One cup of tea, Alpha. I'll hold to the old rule if you will."

Torben looked at me where I stood on the porch.

"Your call," he said quietly.

"One cup," I said. "She stays on the porch."

I put the kettle on.

Verity sat in the rocker by the door, with her cane across her knees and her pearl earrings catching the sun.

She looked at the ridge and the black logs of the lodge and said it was a lovely valley.

I carried out two cups.

I set one in front of her and kept the other, and for a moment neither of us touched them.

"You first," I said.

Verity laughed softly.

"Margo, dear. It's only chamomile."

"I know it is."

She picked up her cup, looked at me over the rim, and drank half of it in one swallow.

"There," she said. "Are we finished with the theater?"

"Say what you came to say."

She set the cup on the arm of the rocker.

"I came with an offer," she said. "A very generous one, and you'll want to hear all of it before you answer."

"I'm listening."

"Heath will sign a statement in front of witnesses about the seal order. The east road deed goes to Blackfern forever, with ten acres along the stream, and a payment for the families." She folded her hands. "Imogen and the baby stay safe in my son's house. And you walk up to the Stone tomorrow at dawn and say the release words."
