Chapter 11: Not a Date

Hannah's POV

I woke with Rhys's arm across my ribs and Colin's voice on the other side of the door.

For about one breath, I couldn't move.

Then I thought about the recording on my phone, and I sat up.

"Morning, babe!" I called, in the sweetest voice I owned. "Give me a second!"

Rhys stared at me with his hair standing up.

I pulled on the red dress, zipped it halfway, and buttoned the yellow cardigan over it to the neck.

It had been a long night, and I looked like it.

I opened the door a few inches.

Colin stood in the hallway with two cups and a pastry bag, and his hair stuck up on one side.

"You slept in here?" he said.

"The couch had your hat on it," I said. "You were snoring. Rhys gave me his bed and took the floor."

Behind me, Rhys said, "Floor's terrible."

"He says it's terrible," I said.

Colin looked at the dress, at the cardigan, at the rumpled bed, and his face relaxed.

"That's my girl," he said. "Obedient even when I'm unconscious."

I smiled at him until my face ached.

"The coffee's cinnamon," he said, and handed it over.

I took it, kissed his cheek, and walked past him to the door with my shoes in my hand.

Rhys followed me down the stairs to the street.

It was cold and bright, and the whole block smelled like wet leaves.

"He believed it," Rhys said.

"He believes everything he reads about me."

"I need to tell you what I found on his phone."
