Chapter 17: The Seating Chart

Rhys's POV

Colin came home at one in the morning with a folder under his arm and sat down on my couch without taking his coat off.

I turned off the television.

"She called me," he said. "Delaney. She was crying."

"About the post?"

"She said the doxxers found her old school and her car. She said she had to say she barely knew me, or they'd come for me too." He rubbed his face. "She said it was to protect us."

"Us."

"Me and her. I mean, me." He looked at the folder. "She says the Friday guy is a friend. Her old boss. He's lonely. He's been helping her since she lost her job, and nothing's going on."

"Every Friday. At eight."

"They have dinner."

"Colin."

He looked up at me, and I saw it happen.

I had known him since we were nine, and I knew the exact shape of the moment he decided to believe what was easiest.

His shoulders came down.

"She's going to explain everything after the dinner," he said. "She promised. I do the proposal, the thread goes nuts, and then she says it's all part of the show."

"Part of the show."

"The whole thing, man. Hannah included." He stood up and swayed. "I need sleep."

He walked down the hall with the folder still under his arm.

I stayed where I was.

I could have gone after him and told him all of it, the DMs and the login and the recording.

I didn't, because Hannah wanted him to say it out loud with her family listening, and a warned Colin would have run.

That was a real reason.

It was also true that I liked watching him go to bed knowing nothing, and I didn't like that about myself.
