I stood there with the quilt in my arms and looked at her coat.
In my closet. On the hanger beside mine.
I set the quilt on the bench, on top of the mail.
I didn't decide to touch it. My hand just went into the right pocket.
A lipstick. A parking stub from the garage under the firm.
In the left pocket, a folded square of pink paper.
I knew that pink. Every lawyer in that tower knew it.
It was the carbon from the firm's cash request pad.
I unfolded it.
WITNESS LOCATE FEE. $1,500.00. CASH.
A client file number.
The date. August 25.
The day after the summer party.
Two days before the lot.
At the bottom, on the line marked Approved, two initials in blue ink, in the handwriting I'd watched practice its signature when it made partner.
B.T.
I heard him in the kitchen doorway behind me.
"Lainie?"
I didn't turn around. I took out my phone.
I photographed the front. I photographed the back.
I photographed it lying in my palm beside the coat, so you could see whose coat it was.
Then I folded it on the same creases and put it back in her pocket.
