Chapter 9: Deposition
"Can he do that?" I asked.
"He's her lawyer. He can ask you anything that's relevant, under oath, for seven hours." Darla cracked her gum. "And I can object to every single question, for seven hours."
"What's he going to ask?"
"Sugar. You know exactly what he's going to ask."
I did.
On Thursday morning I put three sketchbooks in a canvas bag and carried it up to the twenty-first floor myself.
JURY 27, JURY 19 and JURY 30.
Darla had read every page of all three on Tuesday night at Ike's kitchen table.
Nettie slept on the couch, and Ike made grilled cheese at midnight.
"This is the most beautiful evidence I have ever seen," she'd said. "And I once had a nursing home's own email calling my client 'the screamer.'"
The same conference room. The same river.
A court reporter with a little machine. A videographer with a camera on a tripod, pointed straight at my chair.
Kerri wasn't there. She didn't have to be.
Brantley sat directly across from me.
He wore a navy suit and the reading glasses I'd bought him.
His legal pad was already full of neat blue capitals.
He looked at me the way he looks at witnesses.
Friendly and patient, and a little sorry for me.
"Please state your name for the record."
"Lainie Shore."
"You're married to me."
"For now."
The court reporter's fingers paused, then went on.
He started slow. He always does.
Where did I live, how long had I worked for the station, when had I met Ms. Gaskill.
Then the summer party.
"You approached Ms. Gaskill in front of two senior partners."
"Yes."
"You'd had two glasses of wine."
"One and a half."
"And you accused her of an affair with your husband."
"I asked her."
"Do you have any evidence of an affair?"
