Chapter 13: Whose Wrist
"Nineteen months," Samson said.
I had not expected him to answer.
"The transit authority sent me a copy after the judge threw out the warrant."
"And you kept it."
"In my glove box."
"You kept it in your car," I said, "and you sat at my mother's table tonight and told me the call log wasn't proof."
"It isn't proof."
"You knew there was a wrist!"
He did not look away.
"I watched it once," he said. "I saw a hand on a wheel, and something on the wrist. I told myself it was a bracelet or a glare."
"For nineteen months."
"I never played it again."
"Why?"
"Because I was afraid of whose wrist it was."
The kitchen light hummed over us.
I pushed the laptop lid halfway down, so I would not have to look at the frozen hand.
"You stood in this house," I said. "You told me we would get him."
"I know."
"Then you had a clip that might have been him, and you hid it from the one person who had a right to see it."
"I'm a cop, Victoria. A wrist isn't evidence. A defense lawyer would have laughed it out of the room."
"A defense lawyer," I said. "Brice."
He flinched.
"You don't get to decide what I can stand to see," I said.
"You're right."
"You don't get to protect me from my own mother's death."
"You're right."
"Stop saying I'm right!"
He took one step toward me and stopped.
His hands were open at his sides.
"There is something else," he said. "I need to say it now, because after tonight you won't let me."
"Say it."
"The warrant was not my typo."
I stared at him.
"I typed the right address. I printed the affidavit at my kitchen table the night before the hearing, with my brother sitting across from me. I left the room to take a call. In the morning the page said 1482."
