Chapter 13: Everything on the Table

Nobody in the library said a word for a long time.

Then Eleanor put both hands on the head of her cane and stood up.

She was a small woman, and she did it slowly, and the whole room waited for her.

"Ethan," she said. "Your phone, your company card and your keys to my house."

"Grandmother, wait."

"They go on the table."

Ethan looked around the room for someone to speak for him.

Nobody did.

He took the phone from his pocket and laid it on the table beside the cream envelope.

The card came next, and the keys.

"As of this minute, you are no longer a vice president of Sorrell Hospitality," Eleanor said. "My lawyer will send the letter tomorrow."

"You can't do that over a test."

"I'm not doing it over the test."

Her pale eyes went to me and came back.

"Seven years you had a wife I never met. You told me you paid off your own law school loans. A woman you called a nobody paid them, and she's standing at my door."

"That's not fair."

"The trust in the child's name ends today," Eleanor said. "The money goes back to the company."

"It's for Maisie!"

"Maisie isn't yours, Ethan."

He opened his mouth and found there was nothing in it.

He had been so sure of himself an hour ago, and I watched it leave him a piece at a time.

Eleanor turned to the sofa.
