Chapter 15: A Hundred Miles

Samson's POV

Lena knew the town.

She had mailed Becca's sister a card there every Christmas for ten years.

She wrote the road on the back of her hand with a pen from the kitchen drawer.

We were in my rental car within the hour, heading west with the heater on high.

I drove, and she watched the road, and neither of us said anything for forty miles.

Then she said, "Stop it."

"Stop what?"

"Doing the arithmetic. I can hear you doing it."

I kept my eyes on the highway.

"Six years," I said. "She raised my daughter alone, and I ran deals in Singapore."

"I picked that flight before she told me anything. She's the one who paid for it."

"You didn't know."

"I didn't ask."

"Samson." She turned in her seat. "She picked your brother. She let a man who lies for a living put his name on your daughter. That's hers, not yours."

"And when Maisie asks where I was?"

"Then you tell her. And you stay in the room for what she says back."

I didn't answer.

I had gone through this in my head for two days, and I'd kept landing on the same hard fact.

Lena had been lied to by a Sorrell for seven years.

Now I was one more Sorrell who had left a child in the middle of a silence.
