Chapter 16: Rules Are Gone

Lena's POV

Becca followed us back to Connecticut in her own car, with Maisie asleep in the booster seat.

Eleanor met them at the door in her dressing gown and said only, "East room. Soup in ten minutes."

That left the night, and one empty suite in the Fairbanks hotel in downtown Hartford that I now owned.

I had never been inside it.

The night manager gave me a key card without a single question, and Samson carried my box of scrubs up in the elevator and set it down by the door.

"I'll go," he said.

"You will not."

"Lena. The hearing is at nine."

"You told me no personal questions until the Fairbanks business was settled." I shut the door behind us and leaned on it. "You made the rule, and you broke it on Saturday. So the rule's gone."

"That's not how rules work."

"It is when I say so."

His mouth moved, almost a smile, and then it wasn't one.

"Tell me what you want."

"You," I said. "On that bed, with nothing between us. I want it hard, and I want to be the one who says when."

"And if I say when?"

"Then I'll tell you if I like it."

He crossed the room and took my face in both hands, and kissed me so slowly I felt it in my knees.

I pulled his coat off his shoulders, and he stripped my sweater over my head.

My bra went next, and he looked at me with a plain, open hunger and said, "God, I've waited."

"Then stop waiting."

He laid me back on the bed and knelt on the carpet between my knees.

He unbuttoned my jeans and dragged them down with my underwear, and put his mouth on the inside of my thigh.

I fisted my hands in the quilt.

"Samson."

"Say it again."
