Chapter 15: Rank One
The midterm results went up on the glass board outside the lecture hall at nine on Monday morning.
Two hundred students crowded the corridor.
Dante did not push through.
He stood at the back with his hands in his pockets and watched Daniel's red-brown head bob at the front, and Daniel turned around and shouted over everyone.
"First! Javier, you're first! Ninety-eight!"
The corridor made a sound, half cheer and half groan.
Javier stood against the wall with his glasses in his hand.
He didn't smile, not at once.
He looked at Dante across thirty heads, and then he did.
It was the best moment of that whole week.
It lasted until the dean's secretary came down the corridor with a folded note.
"Javier," she said. "The dean would like you in his office. Now, please. With the board of review."
"What board?"
"There's a complaint about the results."
Daniel's grin dropped.
"Who complained?"
The secretary looked at the floor.
"Thomas's father," she said.
Javier took his bag off the floor.
Dante moved before he thought, and Javier put a hand flat on his chest.
"No," he said. "Stay here."
"Javier."
"You said you wouldn't decide for me." He kept his voice low. "I'd like to go in by myself. If I can't stand in that room alone, I can't stand in any room."
Dante's whole body argued with him.
He saw the dean's door, and the lawyer, and the long table where a man with money could do a great deal to a boy with a scholarship.
He took his hand off his own wrist, where he had been gripping it.
"I'll be right here," he said.
"Good."
The office door shut.
Dante stayed.
He stayed while the clock on the wall crawled, and he did not look at the door.
Daniel stood beside him, chewing the cuff of his sleeve.
