On the fourteenth of April the snow went off the farm in a single night.
I lay awake and listened to it go, the roof dripping, the gutters running, a long soft rushing in the dark.
It was the sound I would have run from in December.
I wasn't running.
Nothing in the county was going to wake up that we hadn't already met.
We had spent the winter on the cold days.
Tor's crews and the net's volunteers went street by street in the white mornings with maul and bar.
A gray that stands frozen can be put down as simply as a post.
The last one was in February, on the roof of a feed store in Brandon.
Jonas wrote it in his notebook with a star.
Now the city was clean and quiet, and its people were going home.
The farm stood again.
Three thousand people had rebuilt it in March.
They used the base's lumber and the arena's scaffolding and a great deal of argument.
The house was white and plainer than the old one. The barn was red because Tor said it had to be.
On the hill beside it stood a new tower, ninety feet against the sky.
Bets ran the net from beneath it with two thousand voices and a coffee mug that said WORLD'S OKAYEST.
