Chapter 18: Route 28
I was down the stairs with my boots in my hand before Ramsey had his eyes open.
"Jo?"
"Duchess is out. Somebody let her out."
He was behind me on the porch in his jeans with no shirt, already dialing.
The barn doors at the back stood wide open.
So did the paddock gate.
Its chain hung cut, the ends bright in my flashlight.
Beyond it the pasture ran down black to the tree line, and past the trees was Route 28.
Trucks used Route 28 all night.
Bunny was screaming in her stall.
Mabel was up, swaying, rumbling low and steady, the sound she made when she was calling someone.
Duchess didn't answer.
Clyde came up from the bungalow at a limping run with his slicker on over his pajamas.
He looked at the cut chain.
He put his hand on the gatepost.
"Sheriff's coming," Ramsey said. "Ten minutes."
"She doesn't have ten minutes. There's a gravel truck through here at three every night."
I ran.
I found her tracks at the tree line, big as dinner plates, and lost them in the leaves.
By the time I came out onto the road there were lights.
