Chapter 7: Two Pages

Ruel's POV

The chief pilot slid a single page across his desk and did not say anything until I had read it.

It was a letter on the Pilots' Association letterhead, three years old, addressed to the Port of San Diego.

It recommended moving the tug berth at the head of the Tenth Avenue pier to the south slip.

The new class of ship needed a clear approach, it said.

At the bottom, over the title Safety Secretary, was my signature.

"Braddock's counsel sent it this morning," the chief said. "Along with a complaint."

"What does the complaint say?"

"That you wrote this, and now you're blocking the berth you asked for."

He rubbed his eyes.

"And that you spent Tuesday night at the Medeiros yard."

"The second part isn't their business," I said.

"It is if you're sitting on a ship's bridge for a family that's suing the woman."

"They aren't suing her yet," I said.

"Ruel."

"I wrote that letter off the Port's drawings."

The chief waited.
